Bloom Day - April 2011

Sweet Alyssum Sweet Alyssum

It's Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day again! A lot of blooms showed up just in time for Bloom Day, like the Gardenia and the Sunflower, but others have been blooming non-stop for months.

It is difficult to see in the photo, but a hummingbird buzzed right past us and fed on the Mexican Honeysuckle I just planted in our front yard. I had always heard about how much hummingbirds loved this plant, but this was the first time I got to witness it first hand!  The society garlic is also beginning to bloom and will most likely continue through the summer.

The gardenia is a new plant that I have wanted for a long time but have just recently learned from other gardeners on how to keep them in the desert.  Turns out the key is a bit of morning sun and shade for the rest of the day will get them through the summer.  So hopefully mine will make it through without a hitch!

The alyssum and violas I planted in containers outside last October and they are still blooming like crazy!  Talk about performers!

The vegetable bed is doing pretty well, the melons are doing so-so.  I need to check the soaker house to make sure there are no kinks and everything is getting watered evenly.

The navel orange tree is also a new addition to the yard and was excited to capture a photo of a bee hard at work on the blossoms.  Oh, do those blossoms smell good!

It definitely looks like summer in your garden! I'm just happy to have any blooms at all after a long winter. Happy Bloom Day!

Stunning, all your blooms. Happy Bloom Day.

Miss Billie always said to plant yellow violas because they show up so well.

Gardenias are tougher than people would have you believe.
